Omega 3's in our Meat??? Fats, in this age of obesity and processed foods, have all received a bad reputation; but Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids are, as their name suggests, an essential part of our diet, yet our modern day diets lack this key nutrient. At the same time, dark and red meats have also received the same marring. Yet livestock raised properly are full of Omega 3 Fatty Acids, a fact few consumers know. The problem is with the way livestock farming has evolved, or devolved. Animals today are confined and fed unnatural diets that then have to be supplemented with chemicals. Cattle, also called ruminants, have multiple stomachs that are designed to efficiently digest grass, green sunlight, and otherwise unusable resource. Yet the livestock industy reap far greater profits by 'grain feeding' cattle. The grain, which is mostly corn, makes the animals very fat very fast! The problem is that corn also makes cattle sick; their stomachs become overly acidic and their livers become damaged among many other problems; and so the need arose for antibiotics and other supplements. Unhealthy obese animals make unhealthy food! Cholesterol and calories are the least of our worries when consuming thes products. Because store meat is grown on grain and our meat is grown on pasture they are different products and cannot be compared. They also need to be cooked differently in some cases.
